| INTRODUCTION |
The POMP V Caregiver Support and Assessment Survey instrument was
developed based on the work conducted over the past 5 years. To provide
a more complete assessment of services offered through the National
Family Caregiver Support Program (NFCSP), the POMP IV survey instrument
was modified to more explicitly include the five NFCSP direct services
listed below.
- Information to caregivers about available services;
- Assistance to caregivers in gaining access to supportive services;
- Individual counseling, organization of support groups, and caregiver training to assist caregivers
in making decisions and solving problems relating to their caregiving roles;
- Respite care to enable caregivers to be temporarily relieved from their caregiving responsibilities; and
- Supplemental services, on a limited basis to complement the care provided by caregivers.
The Caregiver Support and Satisfaction Survey instrument already
included much of the information needed to provide an assessment
of the services and activities specifically included in NFCSP. Based
on 4 years of research and participant interaction, the caregiver
instrument includes the following information:
- Services received from the aging network by the caregiver and the
care recipient;
- Additional services desired, if any;
- Ratings of the services received, including overall service assessment,
effects on caregiving tasks, effects on relationships with the care
recipients, and ratings of the quality of services received;
- Demographic information about the caregiver and the care recipient;
- Detailed information about the kinds of care actually provided; and
- Information on the caregiver's assessment of the burdens and rewards of caregiving.

The caregiver performance measure focuses on the tasks performed by the
caregiver of the client. The Caregiver Survey contains modified questions
from the National Long Term Care Survey that address the personal satisfactions
and burdens associated with providing care for someone else. The impact
of AAA-sponsored services on caregiving responsibilites is also addressed.
